ASL Students Share Stories and Build Connections on Field Trip
Last Wednesday, our Honors ASL 3 students took their classroom learning into the real world with a meaningful field trip to Utah Street Span School in Los Angeles, where they had the opportunity to visit and engage with Deaf students from preschool through middle school.
Each Maranatha student signed a story in American Sign Language to the younger students, bringing characters to life through expressive movement and storytelling. After the presentations, the students spent time in classrooms, practicing their ASL skills and building authentic connections with the children.
One especially meaningful moment came when a group of MHS students were given name signs—a special cultural gesture within the Deaf community that can only be bestowed by a Deaf individual. It was a powerful and affirming moment that highlighted the mutual respect and joy shared throughout the day.
The experience left a lasting impression, and our students are already looking forward to returning next year to continue learning and building relationships.
