How You Can Be Part of This Year’s Winter Term

We are thrilled to announce that our annual Winter Term experience will run from January 28-31, 2025!

For those who may need a primer on this incredible experience, Winter Term is all about getting to explore new areas of inquiry that would otherwise not fit neatly into a traditional academic year. We carve out an entire week for students to register and participate in fun and unique course offerings in hopes that their horizons would broaden and their passions for learning would deepen.

Winter Term is structured around four topical seminars: two of which are four-days long, and the other two of which are singleton courses that only meet once. See the week’s schedule HERE.

Courses are developed by our talented faculty, staff, and administrators, but they are also developed by our amazing alumni, parents, and grandparents! That is where you come in: We would love to invite you to be a part of this experience by offering a course that showcases a personal passion of yours or a vocation that you call your own.

So what type of courses are we looking for? We’ve learned quite a bit in the past few years about the types of courses that our students are most keen to experience. The following is certainly not an exhaustive list of course offerings we are looking for, but it should help give some clarity as to what type of courses would be most successful:
  • Courses that help students develop their artistic or creative skills
  • Courses that help students explore vocations and careers of interest
  • Courses that explore unusual or niche hobbies and interests
  • Courses that get our students into the great outdoors
  • Courses that are centered around hands-on activities

A helpful question to consider if the above sounds interesting to you: “What are my passions and interests, and how can I share about them in ways that are highly engaging and participatory?” Remember, because this is Maranatha, we may be teaching our passions to a highly competent group of teenagers, but they are teenagers nonetheless! Think carefully about how young people like to learn, and design your course accordingly!

If you are interested in being a part of Winter Term by offering either a weeklong seminar or a singleton course, please reach out to Mrs. Beth Romero at b_romero@mhs-hs.org by or before Friday, October 25.

APPENDIX: Here are some Winter Term courses offered by some of our parents and alumni that were extremely popular with our students last year. Take some time to read through the course descriptions to start thinking about a) what type of course you might want to offer, and b) how to design such a course.

Let’s Talk Food!
Food is obviously an essential part of life. More than that, however, food can be a building block for lifelong memories. This class will have a wide open discussion about all different kinds of food. What kinds of food do you like? What are typical examples of food from your home? What are your favorite restaurants? Which types of food are trendy today? More importantly, what role has food played in your life? How does food bring people together? Based on Wednesday’s discussions, the class will put food to the test by actually sampling different types of food on Friday. Note: There will be a $20 materials fee for Friday. Students with food allergies may participate at their own risk.

Using Drones To Make 3D Models
This course will cover a variety of ways to create 3D models using drone sensors. Some of these techniques include: Structure From Motion, Photogrammetry, and Videogrammetry. There will be a presentation and discussion in the classroom and also a time to go outside and fly! While outside, students will have the opportunity to fly a drone and learn the processes of capturing data for the 3D models. Back in the classroom, there will be a demonstration on what software is used to stitch together the data that will be collected, and hopefully see a 3D model of the Maranatha campus! Any student that is interested in taking this course can participate!
